How do I make waffles in a cast iron waffle iron?
I have a old fashion cast iron waffle maker that sits on my stove top. i tried to make waffles this morning but didn't have much success. How long on each side? How much to put in it? And heat level?
If the waffle iron is properly seasoned, no sweat. You'll still want to coat it with vegetable oil (with a pastry brush or just a paper towel), but you shouldn't have any problem.
If the waffle iron is new, or has been scoured clean (usually you just want to wipe them out), it will need seasoning. You do that by heating it quite hot, coating it thoroughly with vegetable oil, and letting it cool. Wipe out any excess and you're good to go.
BTW - if you're using a regular pancake mix, you'll want to add a tablespoon or so of vegetable oil to the mix, too.
