She shows herself to be a hypocrite because she is talking about a fair democracy yet she is prejudice against Tom's case. Tom was accused of raping Mayella Ewell. Tom was helping Mayella with some chores and she made a move on him. He tried to back off but then her father, Bob Ewell, came home and saw them together. Mayella didn't want to lose her reputation, not that she really had one, by making herself (as a white woman) being seen like that with a black man. To save herself she cried rape and blamed Tom. He didn't rape her, but was found guilty because of the prejudice in Maycomb County, and the southern states in general. It is Braxton not Baxton, Braxton Bragg Underwood is the owner and editor of the local newspaper who was ready to defend Atticus and Tom Robinson from the lynch mob with a shotgun even though he is known to "despise" black people.
Not sure how old Tom is.
